San Leonardo Cycling Challenge 12th edition

The San Leonardo Cycling Challenge is an established tradition conducted in March every year in San Leonardo town in Nueva Ecija. It is the brainchild of the three cycling aficionados led by Mr. Eddie Vibar including Manny Vivar and Rey Fernandez.

The cycling challenge came to fruition after a small talk and consensus of the trio to rekindle the excitement of their town fiesta through holding of cycling race in San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija. The rest is history.

The 12th edition of San Leonardo Cycling Challenge was a resounding success. The said longest-running and now PhilCycling-sanctioned cycling race in Nueva Ecija was likewise graced by the 32nd SEA Games back-to-back bronze medalist Ronald Oranza along with his close-knit Philippine Navy Standard Insurance team and other highly established professional cycling teams, such as Excellent Noodles, 7-Eleven by Road Bike Philippines, Go For Gold, among others.

This year’s edition comprised of four categories: Women’s, 45 up, Open-Amateur and the main event and Open-Pro.

For donkey’s years, the open-pro category has become the centerpiece of San Leonardo Cycling Challenge.

As hoped-for, the indomitable Oranza dictated the tempo and pulled out all the stops to dominate in his category. As such, a great expectation to rule was a tall order for the PNSI team captain.

Roughly 500 meters to the finish, the break came to a head while some kept their eye peeled. Suddenly, Oranza pulled through and took a flyer as George Oconer continued to be the lead out while Rustom Lim lurked and seated behind Oranza until they crossed the finish.

Ultimately, the Pangasinan pride and the LBC Ronda Pilipinas 2018 champion hit the ground running and emerged as the overall winner of the 12th edition of San Leonardo Cycling Challenge.

Ronald Oranza displayed his true class act, at close quarters with another paragon, Rustom Lim, in a mad dash to the finish. Marcelo Felipe, meanwhile, completed the podium.
