Victor Espiritu, the Philippines’ sole standout in cycling at the 1998 Asian Games, made history by securing a bronze medal—the first and only one for the country in the event’s history.
Espiritu’s remarkable achievement at the Asian Games followed his strong performance in the final edition of the prestigious Marlboro Tour (International), which was won by fellow Filipino Warren Davadilla. These milestones coincided with the Philippines’ centenary celebration that same year, during the administration of then-President Fidel V. Ramos.

The 13th Asian Games 1998 medalists: (L-R) Japan’s Makoto Ilijima (silver), Hong-Kong’s Wong Kam Po (gold) and Philippines Victor Espiritu (bronze), brother of National Cycling Team Coach Virgilio “My Cycling Diary” Espiritu.
