Norberto Oconer: Two-Time Olympian and Philippine Cycling Icon

Who is NORBERTO OCONER?

Norberto Oconer is a distinguished cyclist from Tondo, Manila, recognized for his exceptional contributions to Philippine cycling. A two-time Olympian, Oconer represented the Philippines in the 1988 and 1992 Summer Olympics. He is also the father of George Oconer, the champion of the 10th year-anniversary race of LBC Ronda Pilipinas.

Oconer had a remarkable career as a road cyclist and was a valuable member of the Philippine national team. Throughout his career, he competed in various international events, including the SEA Games, where he earned a gold and a silver medal at the 16th SEA Games held in the Philippines in 1991. His performance contributed to the Philippines’ impressive haul of 91 golds and 62 silvers after the said biennial meet.

In addition to his SEA Games achievements, Oconer participated in the final three editions of the Marlboro Tour as a rookie in 1996, finishing in 5th place.

Beyond his competitive career, Oconer played a key role in the development of Philippine cycling, serving as part of the coaching staff of the Casino Filipino Cycling Team alongside Cesar Lobramonte. This team, which was the country’s first professional and continental cycling team, was founded by Mr. Ric Rodriguez.

Oconer’s legacy continues to inspire the next generation of cyclists in the Philippines.
