SHIFTING GEARS: A CYCLIST-TURNED-LAWYER

Corneliio “Paddy” Padilla Jr., a cyclist-turned-lawyer, was among the finest athletes of his era. At just 17, he captured the 1964 National Amateur Cycling Championship. As one of the leading contenders in an Olympic road race, a spill forced him to finish on foot, demonstrating remarkable determination and resilience.

After retiring from cycling in 1974, Padilla left an indelible mark as the country’s second back-to-back national tour champion. He was honored with multiple accolades: Philippine Sportswriters Association Amateur Cyclist of the Year (1964), Professional Cyclist of the Year (1966), and Sportsman of the Year (1967).

Padilla also played a pivotal role in founding the first Marlboro Tour in 1977, won by his former competitor, Jesus Aquino Garcia Jr.

Following his cycling career, the late Cornelio Padilla Jr. continued to excel as the house lawyer and later a top executive at National Book Store.
