Mamerto Eden was the overall winner of the third edition of the Tour of Luzon in 1958 and the oldest cyclist to compete in the Tour of Luzon-Visayas in 1974, at the age of 51.
Mamerto Eden, an iron-willed cyclist, hailed from Mapandan, Pangasinan.
Known for his strong will and resilience, Eden was not just a cyclist but also a marathoner who defied incredible odds.
Before rising to cycling fame, he worked as a painter and carpenter at an ammunition depot. His athletic talent earned him a scholarship at Dagupan Colleges in 1950, eight years before his remarkable victory in the 1958 national tour.
The cyclopreneur, Mamerto Eden, first competed in the Tour of Luzon in 1957, motivated by the hope of winning a significant cash prize to support his entrepreneurial ventures. However, his journey was riddled with challenges, including a harrowing stage 3 accident in which he fell into a 20-foot-deep ravine, ultimately forcing him to withdraw from the race.
Despite these setbacks, his perseverance and determination led him to ultimate triumph the following year.
