MERVIN CORPUZ | The Broken Warrior of MPTC Tour of Luzon 2025

Mervin Corpuz shared with Team KapaDyak kool bikers the real story behind the final kilometers of the MPTC Tour of Luzon 2025.

According to Corpuz, he joined the breakaway early in the final stage—before the 30-kilometer mark—and felt strong all the way up Kennon Road. But just as the race entered its most critical and beyond categorization (hors categorie) stretch, fatigue took its toll. His morale plummeted, and his energy suddenly drained, especially after spotting the Yellow Jersey wearer from the Gapyeong Cycling Team—the rider whose overall lead he had virtually usurped—riding in the same group.

As the captain of the MPT DriveHub Team, Corpuz had a defining moment in the race’s history. At one point, he virtually overtook the overall race leader, Dae Yeong Joo—a feat regarded as the “holy grail” or “tall order” for many General Classification contenders. Corpuz, the Umingan Pride, provisionally held a 40-second GC lead over Joo at once instance. This was especially significant given that the Filipino heartbreaker, Joo, had been ahead of him by 2 minutes and 10 seconds in the GC heading into the final stage. This fleeting 40-second gap was the slimmest time difference ever inflicted by a Filipino against the ever-resilient overall leader as the Tour of Luzon: The Great Revival developed in the 172.5 km final stage.

However, Corpuz’s strength faded in the latter part of the stage. He eventually finished 64th and dropped from 2nd to 38th overall in the final General Classification standings of the MPTC Tour of Luzon 2025.

Meanwhile, Corpuz, the broken warrior of the race, clinched the Best Sprinter’s Classification title, outpacing fellow contenders Ean Cajucom and Jan Paul Morales.
