SAN JUANICO BRIDGE: A Historic Icon Facing Today’s Challenges

The San Juanico Bridge, aka Bridge of Love, an enduring symbol of unity in Eastern Visayas (Region VIII) and a historic venue for the 15th Tour of Luzon-Visayas dubbed “A Tale of Two Cities,” is currently under safety monitoring.

The 2.16 km San Juanico Bridge, stretching across the 2 km-wide San Juanico Strait (country’s smallest strait) and considered an arterial road, has only recently faced structural integrity concerns. According to reports, authorities have implemented traffic controls and weight restrictions as a precautionary measure.

The 1974 Tour of Luzon-Visayas, the longest edition at the time, partly crossed the iconic bridge linking Samar and Leyte, covered 18 stages and spanned 2,541.87 kilometers across 22 provinces, 18 cities, and 201 towns. It also marked a milestone when former Tour of Luzon grand winner Mamerto Eden, then 51 years old, became the oldest rider to complete the record-length edition, placing 31st overall.

San Juanico Bridge, once the longest bridge in the Philippines, remains an icon to Filipinos forever.
