Placido “The Flash” Valdez, the uncrowned legend of Philippine cycling, a legend in his own right, has his definitive take on Mervin Corpuz’s struggle to get a championship. Corpuz traced his lineage from the 4-time national cycling tour champion, Santy Barnachea, whose legacy continues to inspire generations.
When interviewed, Placido Valdez pinpointed the core issue with Corpuz’s failure to clinch a championship. Yet, Valdez was very optimistic about Corpuz and predicted: “Magcha-champion din siya, tamang move lang dapat. Maagang tumitira eh—minsan sobrang excited—siya yung nagsusunog (wasting energy) eh, porket naiiwan ang kalaban.”
Likewise, Valdez believed Corpuz has championship-level strength but only timing and energy management should be carefully addressed: “Dapat yung lakas nga nya na yan, nakaka-dalawang championships na sana siya. Ganung-ganon din si Santy noon, nakita ko eh. Siyempre magka-dugo yan, kumbaga, hindi magkakalayo, magcha-champion din yan.”
