Placido “The Flash” Valdez is truly a legend in his own right.
A Marlboro Tour rookie in 1989, Valdez, a native of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija, was among the perennial runners-up who never captured a championship title, yet remained beloved by cycling fans for his lionheartedness and grit.
He rose through the ranks from domestique and chief lieutenant to becoming team captain in 1993.
An alter ego of Gerardo Igos, Valdez was a ruthless daredevil on the downhill and equally dominant on the climbs in his prime.
Notably, Valdez’s historic breakthrough at the Asian MTB Championships has remained unmatched since 1997. To this day, he remains the only Filipino to clinch a gold medal in an event traditionally dominated by Chinese and Japanese riders—doing so on a bare rim in Danao City, Cebu.

Over the course of his career, he amassed a total of eight top placements, nine first runner-up finishes, and eight second runner-up finishes.
