The Perennial Threat

During the 2019 PRUride PH UCI 2.2 stage one, then Go For Gold rider, Ismael Grospe, nosed out the 33-year-old Hyo-suk Gong of LX Cycling Team in Subic. This was the first-ever stage win for Grospe in his cycling career and the first stage win for Go For Gold in a UCI-sanctioned race since becoming a Continental team.

Since the 1960s, Korean riders have been a perennial threat to Filipinos.

In 1962, Edmundo de Guzman defeated Kim Ho Soon by a margin of 1 min and 43 seconds.

Fast forward to the 1997 Marlboro Tour, Ji Sung Hwang amassed a staggering seven stage victories, shattering the long-standing 1980 record of six held by Manolito Moring—still a tough act to follow for our local peloton up to this time.

Lastly, the South Korean contingent’s mastery was on full display in the MPTC Tour of Luzon 2025, wherein Joo Dae Yeong set a record-breaking, razor-thin margin of just 6 seconds.
